Day 1: Arrival and Transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Upon your arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you will be met by our experienced safari guide, who will assist with your transfer to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, one of Uganda’s premier wildlife destinations.

The drive is scenic, taking you through the vibrant Ugandan countryside, with stunning views of rolling hills, terraced farmlands, and local villages. You’ll stop for refreshments along the way and have an opportunity to take photos of the picturesque landscape.

Once you arrive at Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, check in at your luxury lodge where you can relax and unwind. In the evening, enjoy a gourmet dinner and prepare for your first gorilla trekking adventure the following day.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

After an early breakfast, your guide will escort you to the Bwindi Park Headquarters, where you will be briefed on gorilla trekking safety guidelines and etiquette. Once the briefing is complete, you will be assigned to a specific gorilla family to track, depending on your physical fitness level and preferences.

Your trek through Bwindi’s dense, mist-covered forests will be guided by expert trackers and park rangers, who will lead you to one of the habituated gorilla families. The trek duration can vary from 2 to 6 hours depending on the location of the gorillas, but it is sure to be an unforgettable experience.

When you finally come face-to-face with the gorillas, you will be allowed one hour to observe them in their natural habitat. This intimate experience provides you with a rare opportunity to see the gorillas interact, feed, and play.

After your trek, return to your lodge for a well-deserved rest, where you can relax and enjoy a hearty dinner.

Day 3: Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

After breakfast, you’ll drive to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, located in the far southwestern corner of Uganda. This park is known for its stunning volcanic landscapes and is part of the greater Virunga Massif, which spans Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mgahinga is less crowded than Bwindi, offering a more intimate and peaceful trekking experience.

Upon arrival at the park headquarters, you will undergo another briefing session before embarking on your second gorilla trek. You will be assigned to a gorilla family in the park, either in the Virunga or Nshongi groups.

The terrain in Mgahinga is mountainous, with views of the three volcanic peaks – Mount Muhavura, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Sabyinyo. The trek here will offer a slightly different experience, as you track the gorillas through the forested slopes and rocky terrain.

After your encounter with the gorillas, return to your lodge for a relaxing evening. You’ll have time to enjoy the lodge's amenities and reflect on your double-gorilla trekking adventure.

Day 4: Departure from Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

On the final day of your adventure, enjoy a relaxing breakfast with views of the stunning Virunga Mountains. If time permits, you can opt for a short walk around the lodge grounds to take in the breathtaking surroundings.

Afterward, you will be transferred to Kigali (Rwanda) or Entebbe (Uganda), depending on your travel arrangements. The drive back will be scenic and provide an opportunity for final photos of the incredible landscapes.

Your guide will ensure you arrive in time for your flight home or to continue your next adventure.

Frequently asked questions

How difficult is gorilla trekking in Uganda?

Gorilla trekking can be physically demanding, as it involves hiking through dense forests, sometimes on steep and muddy terrain. However, guides assess your fitness level and assign you to an appropriate gorilla group. The trek can range from 2 to 6 hours, depending on where the gorillas are located. With the support of experienced guides and porters, even moderately fit individuals can enjoy this experience.

What should I wear for the gorilla trek?

It is recommended to wear sturdy hiking boots with good ankle support, long-sleeved shirts and pants to protect against scratches and insects, and a lightweight rain jacket in case of rain. Bring a hat for sun protection and gloves for protection when grabbing onto vegetation during the hike. Don’t forget a camera and binoculars for capturing wildlife.

How many gorilla permits are available each day?

Each day, a limited number of gorilla permits are issued in both Bwindi Impenetrable National Park and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, usually between 8-12 permits per gorilla group. This ensures that the gorillas' environment remains undisturbed. It’s highly recommended to book permits well in advance, especially during the peak seasons (June-September, December-February).

How long is the trek to see the gorillas?

The length of the trek can vary. The average trek takes between 2 to 6 hours, depending on the location of the gorillas on that day. The guides will do their best to find the gorillas, but it’s important to be prepared for a potentially strenuous hike.
